Which Academic Degree can I obtain?

The U.S. education system provides a range of academic degrees tailored to different goals.

Whether you're starting with an associate degree from a community college, aiming for a bachelor’s degree at a university, or advancing with a master's program, there’s a path that fits every student’s needs.

This setup allows students to progressively build on their education, moving from basic studies to specialized knowledge depending on their career plans.

Associate's degree

Typically completed in two years at community colleges, associate degrees offer a foundation in a specific field, preparing students for entry-level jobs or further study.

Bachelor's degree

A four-year degree provided by colleges and universities, covering a broad range of fields. This degree is essential for entry into many professional careers and higher education opportunities.

Master's degree

Advanced degrees that focus on specific areas of expertise, requiring one to two years of study beyond the bachelor’s degree. Master’s programs are designed to deepen knowledge and skills.

Which study programs are available?

In the USA, students can choose from a wide array of study programs that cover various fields:

  • Arts and Humanities
  • Sciences and Engineering
  • Business
  • Health Sciences
  • Education
  • Law

These programs provide both foundational knowledge and specialized skills, readying students for professional success.

What are the academic requirements?

U.S. universities set different academic requirements based on the school.

These typically include considerations like your GPA, SAT scores, and whether you have a high school diploma.

These elements help schools assess if you're prepared for the academic demands of college. It's important for prospective students to check the specific requirements of each university they are interested in.

High School Degree

U.S. universities require that all incoming students have completed high school or hold an equivalent degree, such as an international equivalent to an American high school diploma. This confirms that you have the foundational education necessary for college-level studies.

GPA and Grades

Different universities have varying standards for GPA and grades, reflecting how well you've performed academically. A higher GPA can enhance your application, demonstrating your ability to succeed in a competitive academic environment.

SAT and/or ACT

These standardized tests are critical as they provide a common measure of academic ability and readiness.
Universities may require different scores based on the program's competitiveness and the profile of previously admitted students.

A school year in America

In the USA, the academic year for universities is organized into two main semesters. This structure allows students to engage in a focused period of study and exams, followed by a break.

This system provides a balanced academic calendar that accommodates coursework, extracurricular activities, and personal downtime effectively.

Fall Semester

Running from late August or early September through December, this semester includes major breaks such as Thanksgiving in November, offering students a chance to rest midway.

Spring Semester

Starting in January and ending in May, this semester often features a spring break in March, providing a brief respite before final exams and summer break.
